||
Place your fingers on the Home Row (middle row) on the numeric keypad in the following order:
Thumb finger - on the 0
Index finger - on the 4
Middle finger - on the 5
Ring finger - on the 6
Little finger - on the Enter key
To type the numbers of the upper row, place your fingers in this order:
Index finger - 7
Middle finger - 8
Ring finger - 9
To type the lower row numbers, place your fingers in this order:
Index finger - 1
Middle finger - 2
Ring finger - 3
That's it. Short and sweet. Of course, keep practicing to really get used to it and increase your typing speed.
This may sound dumb, but in fact it may happen, and it happened to me. I just happened to forget about the existence of the Num Lock key on my numeric keypad, and one day - I didn't know what I've done wrong but it just happened: the numeric keypad simply stopped working. I tried to hit the buttons on the keypad, to no effect. The number keys refused to work. I opened my computer calculator, my computer phone-dialing program, my word-processor and more, and tried to type the numbers via the numeral keypad, but it just simply didn't work.
It was quite frustrating, because it was a hassle for me to have to type the numbers by hitting the regular keyboard number keys, and I could not figure out what to do and how to reactivate the numeric keypad.
It took me a while before the Num Lock struck my eyes, and I realized that it in fact exists and is the key just for this purpose. I hit the Num Lock and finally the numeric keys started to work again.
So, if this same mischief ever occurs to you, remember this: the Num Lock key sits at the upper left of your numeric keypad, and its function is to activate or lock the numeric keys. If your keypad works and you hit this button it will stop working. If you hit it again, the keypad will be unlocked and you'll be able to hit the number keys again.
Note: It's a good thing that you learn the number keys too. There are expert typists out there who can type really fast on the keyboard, but when it comes to the numeric keypad they can't touch type, even after years of typing, because they never learned the simple techniques how to type on the keypad.
If you plan to do typing jobs and data entry work, mastering the keypad is even more useful. It will help you type the numbers and enter numeric data in the computer at fast speed.
