One of the most famous forms of repetitive strain injuries is said to be the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Now, understand me correctly - I don't say one of the most "common" RSI, but one of the most "famous" and widely known injuries in result of repetitive stress on the arms, wrists and hands.
The carpal tunnel syndrome - briefly: CTS - is a condition in which the Medial Nerve of the wrist is pinched and compressed. I won't go into the anatomy here, but simply explained, it's the nerve passing through the area in the wrist called "Carpal Tunnel." The disorder happens by swelling of tissues in that area.
There's lot of confusion, controversy and misconception out there in regard to the carpal tunnel injury, its causes and treatment. Some experts appear to differentiate between the terms. I'm not an expert on this theme and can't intervene. All I can do is warn you to care for your health and practice typing properly. No matter how it is called - repetitive strain injury, hand pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or a dozen of other terms - it should be avoided.
It is also the opinion of some experts that this weakness does not happen from typing practice, but from other totally unrelated factors. Others say that it does occurs as a result of using the computer, but common in much higher rates among assembly-line workers. However, specialists seem to agree that keyboard practice can worsen it if not take care off. So, you should definitely be concerned and spare yourself unnecessary pain and aches.

It's my opinion that typing teachers should give also free typing practice health information. Also, typing tutors should include guidance on health issues related to computer and typing practice. Perhaps governement and health officials should distribute more free typing practice saftey tips and warning and do more to educate the public on this important topic. It's that important; sadly, it's also that much neglected and ignored. The stress and work-related injuries probably are not discriminative, and they can strike suddenly without prior notice. As far as I'm concerned here, it should be prevented from occurring as a result of typing practice.
The reports are shocking enough. I don't know how exact the figures are, but they certainly tell us something. I've read about treatment expenses in worth of tens of thousands of dollars for victims of the repetitive stress class injuries. Businesses are said to spend in the billions in compensation for work related injuries, and as I've already mentioned before, the RSI is said to make up a very significant part of those injuries. It's been called by some a national problem or epidemic since computers entered the work place amass.
Employers and individuals will do good to themselves by taking preventive measures against development of these kinds of injuries as a result of their office-occupations. Preventive care can spare them pain, frustration, depression, disability, lose of earning and much a lot of money expenses later on.
